Vinyl Necklace

£160.00

There is an ancient myth about an old man who wanders into a village, desperate for water to quench his thirst. Instead of granting him this simple request, the villagers shut their doors, ignoring his cries for help. All but one kind woman, who fetches him a jug of water. The old man tells the woman to leave the village that night when her child cries. Later that night, it begins to rain heavily and the woman's child begins to cry. Remembering the old man's wisdom, the woman leaves the village with her child. When she returns the next day, she sees that her village has been sunk under a lake and its inhabitants turned into crocodiles. The old man had been a sorcerer, raging his revenge on the selfish villagers.

The crocodile pendant gives the necklace an untamed, fierce spirit and opens your eyes to new possibilities.

STORIES BEHIND THE BEADS

The vintage red beads are African heishi vinyl beads which were originally made using recycled vinyl records, hence their name. Although no longer made this way, they are still the most popular beads in Africa. Each colour of bead has a meaning, red symbolizes spirituality and passion. This particular set of beads is very old and I feel very lucky to have found them because they have a unique character that brand-new beads can never have.

The four large beads are actually nuts that I bought a few years ago and have not been able to find again. They are gloriously smooth, shiny, and lightweight.

The brass rings and round beads are made in West Africa by the Ashanti people using the ancient 'Lost Wax' technique.

MATERIALS

Brass, vulcanite (vinyl beads) and nuts.

JEWELLERY CARE

Brass is a natural material and will develop a patina over time giving your necklace a beautiful character. If you prefer your brass shiny, it can be restored with a brass metal polish.

All other components can be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth when needed.

Your necklace can last a lifetime if stored in a pouch or box and kept away from water, perfumes and harsh cleaning products.
