Coco Necklace
Coco is a lightweight, multi-layer necklace made with coconut beads and soapnuts and finished with a Tuareg-style brass pendant.
STORIES BEHIND THE BEADS
Due to the buoyancy of coconuts, their seeds are often carried great distances by ocean currents. Coconut seeds can travel the sea for over 100 days while still maintaining their ability to grow into a palm tree. Because of this, coconut palms can be found all over the world in tropical climates.
The ebony soapnuts grow in tropical trees throughout the whole of Asia. They are universally used as detergents, shampoos, and soaps. In Ayurveda, they are used for medical purposes. In my house, they are used as beads!
The enigmatic pendant is a brass replica of a Tuareg cross. There is a lot of speculation concerning the meaning of this cross but my favorite story claims that fathers give their sons the cross to signify their transition into adulthood. The four points of the cross symbolize the four corners of the world, representing the young man's newly earned freedom to travel wherever he wishes.
The handcrafted brass bauble tube beads are from the Ivory Coast.
MATERIALS
Brass, soapnuts and coconut.
JEWELLERY CARE
Brass is a natural material and will develop a patina over time giving your necklace a beautiful character. If you prefer your brass shiny, it can be restored with a brass metal polish.
All other components can be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth when needed.
Your necklace can last a lifetime if stored in a pouch or box and kept away from water, perfumes and harsh cleaning products.
